Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy

WSS 130
Magazine

Wargaming is a big hobby with many diverse factions and perspectives: striking a balance that pleases everyone can be truly challenging! We like to think what sets Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy apart from other historical wargaming magazines is its focus on having fun, no matter what kind of wargamer you are or what your background is. WS&S is a light-hearted publication, that pays particular attention to games themselves and how to play them: it doesn’t get bogged down in lengthy historical expositions or recycle content you can read yourself in any history book. While popular periods like WWII, the Napoleonic era, and the ancient world get frequent coverage, we also try to feature the unexpected, with articles on spies, monsters and gangsters to name but a few.

MINIATURE REVIEWS • A look at some of the newest miniatures, terrain pieces, and more from across the wargaming world.

UP FRONT NAKED COMMUNICATION • I was very lucky with my first car. My old man had bought a brand new 3.5L Rover only a year or so before we moved abroad for a few years. He'd put the car in storage and when we returned to Blighty he flogged it to me for two hundred quid. For a teenager living near London but socialising near Manchester (don't ask!), it was a dream car, especially as nobody had invented speed cameras. Leather seats, radio, brushed steel ashtray and…well…nothing else. It had been the height of luxury six years previously and was not too shabby even then.

THE ROMAN SIEGE OF MORGINUM IN 123 BC MAXENTIUS VS THE GAULS • In 125 BC, Rome started a serious effort to subjugate the Gallic tribes in the province of Cisalpine Gaul as a confederation of Gallic tribes revolted against Roman rule. In fact, Roman armies had used the province to move troops to Spain to fight the Carthaginians during the Punic Wars. In 123 BC, the province of Gallia Narbonensis was officially established after the victory of Quintus Fabius Maximus over a coalition of Arverni and Allobroges in southern Gaul.

A “HUMAN WAVE” TRENCH ASSAULT SCENARIO WWI ON THE EASTERN FRONT • The Great War has always been fascinating with its many dimensions, including theatres in Western Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, naval actions around the world, and also the often-overlooked Eastern Front. In recent years, it has been exciting to see the growth of Great War miniature wargaming figures, rules, and resources available for all fronts.

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF WARFARE IN BAVARIA KORNBLUMENBLAU • Today's Free State of Bavaria has a very eventful and often violent past. From a wargaming perspective in particular, Bavaria's history offers some fascinating chapters, as it was involved at times in all kinds of wars alongside larger powers on the continent.

THE BEST BAVARIAN TABLE

OTTO I AT THE BATTLE OF LECHFELD, 955 AD THE SHADOW OF DEATH • Throughout the ninth and tenth centuries, Magyar war- bands launched large raids into Europe, establishing their own kingdom called Hungary and their own kings, the Mag- yar dynasty. These dark age chevauchees ranged as far as what is now France and Spain, and into Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire to the gates of Constantinople in the east.

BAVARIA DURING THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR THE BATTLE OF RAIN, 1632 • The Swedish entry into the Thirty Years' War began in June 1630 when an army of 18,000 men under King Gustavus Adolphus came ashore in the Duchy of Pomerania. Victory at Breitenfeld in September 1631, where he was supported by Saxon and Brandenburg troops, left him in control of large parts of Northern Germany. In the aftermath, a Saxon army led by Elector John George invaded Bohemia while Gustavus prepared to attack Austria.
